December is here and there’s some rocky space weather this month. In the planner, I mark days that are well-aligned / auspicious for magical workings with a star and days where I caution against enchantment with a little circle-slash symbol (the universal ‘no’ symbol). There are a lot of ‘no’ days in December, so I thought it would be useful to talk about how you might interpret them.
First, you can ignore me. I know that sounds weird, but sometimes our instincts or personal alignments suggest that we do something at a certain time. And sometimes, we have to do emergency magic, astrology be damned (though with regular enchantment and planning this sort of things should become LESS frequent).
Second, you can pray. Just because a day isn’t great for practical enchantment doesn’t mean it’s not great for creating an enchanted life. There are so many magical things we do every day that aren’t active spell craft. We might care for ourselves and our households, strengthen connections with those we love, or pray to the spirits we already know. Something like the Lunation Rite (which you do every day for a month and under the auspices of the Agathos Daimon) isn’t going to blow up your life just because something is in retrograde, because it’s basically a series of prayers for personal improvement. You can spice it up with sigils and the like, but you don’t have to.
Third, you can remediate / mitigate. There’s a day every lunar month that’s for ‘Creating talismans of war’ and you know what? Lately, I’m just not that into it. I’d rather hang back and pray peace or maybe do some protective magic for my household. There’s enough energy for war out there already. You can also do more direct remediation. Venus is unhappy in Scorpio for most of the month. So you won’t want to do a bunch of Venus focused magic, but you can remediate. Personal chart remediation is outside the scope of this and I’d recommending consulting with an astrologer who knows magic to come up with a personal chart remediation plan. For more general remediation however, check out this excellent article over at Sphere + Sundry. It’s about Mercury retrograde (and remember, we’re having one of those in December too!) but can be generalized to any planet that’s in a challenging spot.
All that said, the first week of December is one of the bright spots for enchantment and I wanted to highlight the 4th as a day for cord cutting and boundary setting. This is a great thing to do ahead of Venus’s transit through Scorpio. When we think about Venus, we think about connection and desire, but defining what we want and who we want defacto also defines what we do not want and who we do not want. While Saturn is typically more associated with cutting and boundaries, this lunar day is specifically for unbinding sorceries. So you could do worse than invoke Venus for right relation and strong boundaries first thing before she enters Scorpio (at around 11am Pacific Time). Use Eirene if you have it as it’s excellent for this purpose.
Venus in Scorpio is protective of the heart and measured in how She connects. You might find yourself wanting and needing to keep your social and emotional focus closer to your core circle. This is the day, just ahead of Her journey through the Swampland to release the connections that don’t serve you during this time.
