Happy New Year 2023! Next week in Magic, Thursday through Friday is an optimal time for getting your ghost and spirit groove on.
Thursday is not only a day for seeing spirits, but also 12th night and a traditional time for household charms and protections, baking special pastries like the king cake (find the bean and you’re king for a night), wassail, and processions. You could make an entire day of magic around this day, including blessings for your ancestors and your spirit posse, chalking the doors of your house, blessing the land / orchards / gardens, and so on. Wrap the evening up with a viewing of your favorite version of A Christmas Carol (the 2019 Miniseries, if you are in a darker mood, or Scrooged if you’d rather have a laugh).
Friday is the full moon in Cancer and also Epiphany, the celebration of the three Magi (astrologers and magicians) bringing gifts to the Christ Child symbolizing the Birth of the Sun in the Christian tradition. This day is also for spirit bothering (specifically for speaking with demons, though you can be flexible with the definition here). Imagine praying to the Magi for the gifts of astrology, divination, and prosperity for the coming year. There’s a whole Novena to the Magi if that’s your jam and naturally you’d burn Frankincense and Myrrh and if you had a gold ring or coin to bless as a talisman for wisdom and clarity and perseverance… well, there you go.
Since I create an entire planner based on astro-magic timing, this is definitely something I’m leaning into.
My early experience of organized religion was pretty unpleasant, but over the years I’ve been able to follow the thread back, through my Mother’s Catholic line, and into more of the magic buried in the scriptures, saints, and early mystical church. Being a hard core witch just makes plucking those juicy fruits from among the briars of guilt and denial feel even more subversive and delicious.
